Last season, Stargirl briefly mentioned Jakeem Thunder, one of the next generation heroes from the Justice Society comics. Now, Jakeem is set to make his live-action debut. Decider is reporting that Alkoya Brunson has been cast as Jakeem in Stargirl season 2. Brunson will appear on a recurring basis.
Brunson recently starred in Netflix’s Malibu Rescue series, and he also had a supporting role on Me, Myself and I. Additionally, his credits include The Originals, Hidden Figures, Almost Christmas, and The Birth of a Nation.
Within DC’s comic book universe, Jakeem was the heir to Johnny Thunder’s genie, Thunderbolt. To call upon Thunderbolt’s power, Jakeem had to say “so cool,” while Johnny’s magic words were “Cei-U.” Comedian Jim Gaffigan was recently cast to voice the Thunderbolt. Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl (Brec Bassinger) found Thunderbolt’s magic pen in season 1. However, she doesn’t fully realize the power it has within.

EW previously described noted that Thunderbolt’s wishes “often cause more trouble than the wish-asker would ever expect.” Regardless, the Thunderbolt and Jakeem or Johnny have their hearts in the right place. Courtney helped Jakeem find his way in the JSA comic, and she may play that role again here.
Stargirl season 2 is currently in production. It’s also likely to return to The CW in 2021.
