Happy Life Day, everyone! But as many Star Wars fans know, it’s not exactly George Lucas’ favorite holiday. In 1978, the Star Wars Holiday Special lured back Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels, and more for a glorified commercial for toys. It centered on a Life Day celebration with Chewie’s family, and it was essentially a sci-fi comedy variety show. Lucas has never allowed it to get a rerelease. He also hasn’t been shy about sharing his hate for it. Regardless, that didn’t stop the fans from circulating the footage for decades.
Via Coming Soon and i09, filmmakers Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak have announced a new documentary called A Disturbance in the Force. As the name implies, it’s an unauthorized look at the making of the Holiday Special and its cultural impact.
“Most attention on the Holiday Special just focuses on how bad it is and doesn’t go deeper,” said Coon in a statement. “Our film is not going to be 90 minutes of dumping on it because no one wants to watch that. We’re gone really deep in the research and like an onion, there are a lot more layers as to how the Special happened than you would expect.”

“We were also able to find a never before released audio interview with Peter Mayhew talking about the Special along with over 15 hours of audio interviews recorded over twenty years ago with over a dozen people who worked on the Holiday Special,” added Coon. “The recordings include others who passed away that we thought we’d never be able to give a voice in the film.”
Coon and Kozak are also trying to land interviews with The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau, Hamill, and Ford. However, it’s unclear if they will be willing to participate.
A Disturbance In the Force will probably be released close to Life Day in 2021. But that’s just a tentative date for now.
