Netflix is showing off its big guns. The streaming service is more determined than ever to invest in sci-fi series, and it has just announced that they are adapting the Hugo Award-winning The Three-Body Problem and its two sequels by Chinese author Liu Cixin as a series. Game of Thrones creators David Benioff & D.B. Weiss will work on the upcoming adaptation of the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy together with Alexander Woo (True Blood).
“Liu Cixin’s trilogy is the most ambitious science-fiction series we’ve read, taking readers on a journey from the 1960s until the end of time, from life on our pale blue dot to the distant fringes of the universe,” D&D said in a joint statement. “We look forward to spending the next years of our lives bringing this to life for audiences around the world.”
Though best known for fantasy, D&D have some experience with sci-fi. Besides X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Benioff also penned the recent Gemini Man.

Netflix’s project will also involve Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman — best known for Looper and Star Wars: The Last Jedi — as executive producers. The synopsis of the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy — but generally referred to The Three-Body Problem trilogy — reads:
“A secret military group sends signals into space in hopes of establishing contact with aliens — and succeeds. Picking up their signal is an alien civilization on the brink of destruction who now readies to invade Earth. News of the coming invasion divides humanity like never before. Some want to help the superior beings take over a world they see as corrupt. Others prepare to fight the invasion at all cost.”
The first book of the trilogy has already been adapted for the big screen in China. The movie should have debuted back in 2017, but it hasn’t been released yet. In physics, “the three-body problem” refers to the relationship equation between three separate masses in motion, like the Earth, moon, and sun.
