Fox is Developing an Animated X-Files Comedy Series

It’s been over two years since fans of The X-Files caught up with FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. But it looks like Fox isn’t done exploring the paranormal franchise. In fact, Fox has just ordered a new series that aims to take the franchise in new, unexpected directions. Variety is reporting that a new animated X-Files comedy series is currently in the works.

The new show is tentatively titled The X-Files: Albuquerque, and it has already gotten a script and presentation commitment at Fox. Variety has also shared a few plot details for the series, and it sounds strikingly similar to CBS All Access’ Star Trek: Lower Decks. That series centers on an unpopular Starfleet vessel’s support crew, while Albuquerque follows the exploits of the X-Files’ B-team. This consists of “an office full of misfit agents who investigate X-Files cases too wacky, ridiculous or downright dopey for Mulder and Scully to bother with.”

X-Files creator Chris Carter is onboard the project as an executive producer. Rocky Russo and Jeremy Sosenko will also write and executive produce the series. Previously, Russo and Sosenko worked on the script for Movie 43 in 2013. They also wrote for Comedy Central’s Brickleberry and Netflix’s Paradise PD.

Fox’s classic X-Files series originally premiered in 1993 and aired nine seasons before ending in 2002. The series also spawned a theatrical film in 1998 and a sequel, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, that came out in 2008. Fox later aired two more seasons of The X-Files in 2016 and 2018. It’s unclear whether Albuquerque will feature David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprising their roles as Mulder and Scully.

The X-Files: Albuquerque doesn’t have a premiere date yet.
