Last year, Paramount signed Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley to write and direct a new Star Trek film. However, the future of that script may be murky because of Hawley’s plot has become almost too timely.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount has placed Hawley’s Star Trek “on the backburner.” THR suggests that may have happened because Hawley’s script deals with “a virus that wipes out vast parts of the known universe.” In the era of COVID-19, THR notes that it’s “not seen as a good or sensitive fit if you’re making escapist entertainment.”
Additionally, the report states that Hawley’s film is one of three Star Trek movies still technically in development. One of those projects is the Star Trek film that Quentin Tarantino wants to make, as well as a fourth film for the reboot cast from J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek.

Earlier this year, Tarantino indicated that his Star Trek film may still happen even if he doesn’t direct it. A sequel to Star Trek Beyond stalled out after Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth pulled out of the film. The fourth film in the Star Trek reboot series was originally going to feature a time travel adventure with Pine’s Captain Kirk meeting his late father, George Kirk (Hemsworth). But there’s been little movement on that project since Pine and Hemsworth left.
