Joss Whedon’s upcoming return to television has an understandably high expectations. Judging by what we’ve heard so far about The Nevers, it might be his boldest venture yet. It’s been a while since either Whedon or HBO shared an update on the highly anticipated series. But fortunately, co-star Denis O’Hare is drumming up some excitement.
Set in Victorian England, The Nevers centers on a group of women (known as “the Touched”) who develop superhuman abilities. O’Hare joined the series’ last summer as Dr. Edmund Hague, one the show’s chief antagonists. His character is described an American surgeon who “uses his skills in the coldest, most brutal way possible.” This presumably means he’ll conduct unethical experiments on the title characters. But while speaking with BiiiNGE (via Bleeding Cool), O’Hare made Hague sound like the type of villain that viewers will love to hate.

“[The Nevers] is a wild, Victorian, X-Men-meets-Sherlock-Holmes-meets ‘girls-with-super-powers’ mash-up,” said O’Hare. “I play a delightful scientist, and [in] my very first episode, I get to sing.”
O’Hare’s comparison to other popular franchises like X-Men and Sherlock Holmes should be enough to draw in viewers on premiere night. However, his revelation that his character is getting his own musical number may be particularly enticing for longtime fans of Whedon’s work. For the uninitiated, Whedon has dabbled in this realm before with Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So it will be interesting to hear what Whedon and his team came up with this time.
The Nevers is expected to debut on HBO sometime later this year.
