Against all expectations, HBO’s adaptation of Watchmen was one of 2019’s critical hits. Showrunner Damon Lindelof built a new story inspired by the classic comic by Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons. However, Lindelof has been openly reluctant to commit to anything beyond the nine episodes of the first season. Now, it appears that Lindelof has officially moved on from the show.
Via USA Today, Lindelof told the outlet that he has no interest in a second season of Watchmen. Regardless, Lindelof added that he has “given my blessing” to HBO to continue the series with a different showrunner.
Earlier this week, HBO’s President of Programming Casey Bloys told the TCA that the future of Watchmen was in Lindelof’s hands.

“It is really up to Damon at this point, he is thinking about what he wants to do,” said Bloys. “Truly, I don’t know at this point whether it is a returning drama series or a limited series. I think one of the things Damon did so brilliantly was, he opened up this entire world. So maybe there is another version with a whole new set of characters. I don’t know because Damon doesn’t know, and I’m talking his lead on this.”
If Bloys and HBO aren’t willing to move past Lindelof, then Watchmen might really be one and done. But never say never.
