Ewan McGregor Says Obi-Wan Kenobi Wasn’t Intended To Be a Series

Two decades ago, Ewan McGregor took over the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Last summer, McGregor was finally allowed to confirm that he will reprise his role in an Obi-Wan series for Disney+. But according to McGregor, he was originally going to return for the long-rumored Obi-Wan film.

“It wasn’t always going to be a series, not initially,” said McGregor while speaking to our sister site, ComingSoon. “When we first started talking about, that wasn’t really in the cards but everything’s changed so much, so quickly. It’s really exciting that it is now. I’m really into the idea to be able to tell the story over several hours instead of just one hit. I think it’s going to be quite cool.”

McGregor recently confirmed that the Obi-Wan series will take place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Within the Star Wars universe, Kenobi spent nearly two decades on Tatooine to watch over Luke Skywalker. A few of the Star Wars novels and comics chronicled Obi-Wan’s adventures in that timeframe. However, the new series will probably be an original tale. It will likely begin filming in 2020, before hitting Disney+ at some point in the future. A 2021 or 2022 premiere is likely.
