With Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ending next year, some of the show’s stars are beginning to look for new acting jobs. Ming-Na Wen in particular recently joined Disney+’s The Mandalorian, though the nature of her role remains a mystery. However, despite the series’ impending conclusion, Wen doesn’t believe this closes the book on the agents’ stories. In fact, she’s confident that we’ll see Melinda May will return to the MCU after Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has wrapped up.
Wen shared her thoughts while appearing at last weekend’s FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention (via ComicBook.com). She also described the on-set atmosphere during Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s last day of shooting, which took place in July.
“It’s been bittersweet, of course,” said Wen. “We have such an incredible family over there, and when we did our last scene — which I can’t talk about, of course — there was a definite sense of finality about it. And yet we always feel like with Marvel characters, we never really go away. So I’m sure somewhere down the line there will be some sort of incarnation where I have to bring Agent May back.”

Although she aimed to avoid spoiling the upcoming season, Wen’s comments seem to ensure that May survives the series finale. With this, it’s easy to imagine several ways her character could be of use throughout the larger Marvel Universe. It’s true that Marvel has never done a bang-up job of entwining the MCU’s films and TV shows. Regardless, James D’Arcy briefly reprising his Agent Carter role as Edwin Jarvis in Avengers: Endgame proves that it’s not impossible.
