Although the final season of Game of Thrones left fans with mixed feelings, it did very well at this year’s Emmy nominations. Game of Thrones managed to score 32 nominations for the 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards. That breaks a record held by NYPD Blue; which received 26 nominations in 1994. Not only did GoT land another nod for Best Drama series, but it also earned best lead actor bids for Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke. Several supporting actors also got nominations, including Gwendoline Christie, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and Sophie Turner.
Combined with the Chernobyl mini-series and Barry, among others, HBO attained a total of 137 Emmy nominations in all. That gives it a huge lead over its main competitor, Netflix; which earned 117 nominations with its shows. NBC was in a distance third with 58 nominations.

Although Game of Thrones does face stiff competition with certain categories, it should add a few Emmy wins. However, it’s no longer a lock for best drama despite winning twice before. If any show can beat it, this would be the year to do it.
