Netflix Set Up a Stranger Things Answering Machine Easter Egg

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Strangers Things 3!

Netflix has set up a hilarious Easter egg involving the answering machine of the private investigator Murray Bauman from the third season of Stranger Things. Fans can dial Bauman’s number – 618-625-8313 – and listen to the message left by Bauman for Winona Ryder’s Joyce Byers, a message which many fans think is connected with the fate of the protagonists of the series.

“Hi, you have reached the residence of Murray Bauman,” the voice says. “Mom, if this is you, please hang up and call me between the hours of 5 and 6 P.M. as previously discussed, okay? If this is Joyce: Joyce, thank you for calling, I have been trying to reach you. I have an update. It’s about… well, it’s probably best if we speak in person. It’s not good or bad, but it’s something.”

It’s 1985 in Hawkins, Indiana, and summer’s heating up. School’s out, there’s a brand new mall in town, and the Hawkins crew are on the cusp of adulthood. Romance blossoms and complicates the group’s dynamic, and they’ll have to figure out how to grow up without growing apart. Meanwhile, danger looms. When the town’s threatened by enemies old and new, it reminds Eleven and her friends that evil never ends; it evolves. Now they’ll have to band together to survive, and remember that friendship is always stronger than fear.
