Game of Thrones Performer Had To Be Consoled Over Their Fate

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for last night’s Game of Thrones spoilers ahead!

Last night’s episode of Game of Thrones certainly left fans divided over the behavior of Daenerys. It all began with a very crucial death at the beginning. Following admittance from Tyrion over his loyalty to Jon Snow, the Mother of Dragons made no qualms about executing long-time favorite Varys. And that hit the actor portraying him for quite a loop.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Conleth Hill said he was uneasy when it came to accepting the fate of his character.

“I took it very personally…not as an actor or an artist,” explained Hill. “I understood the reactions of previous actors who had been in the same position a lot more than I did at the time. You can’t help feeling that you failed in some way, that you haven’t lived up to some expectation that you didn’t know about. The only thing that consoles you is people who worked a lot harder than you are in the same boat. So that helps. I don’t think anybody who hasn’t been through it can identify with it. They think, ‘What’s all the fuss about? You’re all finishing anyway.’ But you take it personally, you can’t help it.”

“In retrospect, great. At the time, nothing could console me,” said Hill, as he addressed his feelings about Varys’ demise. “I kept thinking: ‘What did I do wrong?’ There wasn’t any pre-warning. All these famous stories about [actors on Thrones] being taken out for a meal or being phoned at the very least [to notify them that their character was being killed off]. This was just reading cold hard copy.”

Additionally, Hill felt that Varys’ decision to turn on Daenerys was ultimately justified.

“All brilliant. All noble,” noted Hill. “He was absolutely true to his word the whole way through. All he wanted was the right person on the throne and a fair person on the throne. He said it so many times in the scripts. I don’t have the distraction of love or desire or any of those things. And the people he needed to see clearly were both in love. So that makes perfect sense. And now with hindsight, I’m okay, but I really was inconsolable.”

The final season of Game of Thrones concludes this Sunday on HBO. What do you think about the way Varys’ life came to an end? Let us know in the comments below!
