While fans await the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, the first prequel series’ first star has been found. Deadline is reporting that Naomi Watts has joined the Game of Thrones prequel pilot. The report notes that Watts’ deal has closed after “lengthy negotiations.”
Watts’ character is only described as “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.” Watts recently appeared in Netflix’s Gypsy, as well as the Twin Peaks revival, and The Book of Henry. She is perhaps best known for headlining The Ring and its first sequel. She also starred in Peter Jackson’s King Kong reboot. Watts is set to star in Showtime’s upcoming Roger Ailes miniseries.

George R.R. Martin and Jane Goldman co-created the Game of Thrones prequel series, which is set thousands of years before the first show. It will reportedly explore the Age of Heroes, and uncover “the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history,” as well as “the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend.” Goldman is showrunning the new series, since David Benioff and D. B. Weiss will have no involvement with the new show.
Goldman will be joined on the series by Game of Thrones co-executive producer Vince Gerardis, and Damages co-creator Daniel Zelman. James Farrell and Jim Danger Gray (Hannibal) are also executive producers. Chris Symes (The Alienist) will serve as a co-executive producer.
