Duffer Brothers on the possibility of a sequel series in future

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Duffer confirmed there is no plan to continue the original characters’ story. He stated there is no intention to revisit the storyline of the core Stranger Things cast.“Mike’s closing the basement door. We’re closing the door on the story,” he said, adding, “It’s the end of their story. It’s the end of the story of Mike and Eleven and Joyce and Hopper.” He emphasized that Stranger Things was always a coming-of-age story, and that narrative is now concluded.

Ross Duffer echoed this, noting the series finale symbolized finality. “We finished saying everything we wanted to say about these characters, this story and the Upside Down,” he said. The closing credits reinforced the finality of the original storyline and characters.

While the Duffer Brothers won’t continue with the original group, they are expanding the universe through new formats. These include a live-action spinoff and an animated series titled Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. According to Matt Duffer, the spinoff will “connect and will answer some of the lingering questions,” particularly referencing the mysterious rock and scientist shown in the finale.

Matt Duffer also stated the new spinoff will explore “an entirely new mythology,” separate from the Mind Flayer or the Upside Down. He added that while it won’t focus on the original core cast, it will still carry “the spirit of Stranger Things.” These projects mark the creative team’s shift towards fresh characters and storylines beyond Hawkins, Indiana.

Addressing the idea of a future sequel featuring the original characters, Matt Duffer dismissed it, saying, “A sequel could be about a midlife crisis. That just sounds really uninteresting… Grandpa Hopper? I don’t know how that would read as anything but a gross cash grab to me.”
