Rumor: Tangled Live-Action Remake Still Eyeing Florence Pugh for Rapunzel

A recent rumor indicates that Marvel’s Thunderbolts* star Florence Pugh could be stepping into the shoes of Rapunzel for the upcoming Tangled live-action remake. The animated original made its way to the theatres in 2010 and instantly became a fan-favorite retelling of a classic story. After Disney’s multiple billion-dollar box office successes with adapting their animated films to live-action, a new version of Tangled has also been put into development.

Thunderbolts* actor Florence Pugh could be Rapunzel in Tangled remake

According to popular internet scooper Daniel Richtman, Florence Pugh, who will reprise her role of Yelena Belova in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*, is currently the frontrunner to portray Rapunzel in the live-action remake of Tangled.

In his latest X(formerly Twitter) post, Richtman stated, “Florence Pugh is still the one who’s being eyed to play Rapunzel.” However, Richtman did not give any concrete news on the film’s casting.

Since the announcement, several theories as to who could play the leading roles in the Tangled live-action remake have emerged on the internet. Aside from Florence Pugh’s potential casting as Rapunzel, her Marvel co-star Kathryn Hahn is being considered to play Mother Gothel, according to Richtman. Disney has not yet confirmed any casting details for the film, however.

According to Deadline’s report from last month, The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey is presently in talks to helm the live-action Tangled remake. Meanwhile, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who co-wrote the MCU sequel Thor: Love and Thunder with Taika Waititi, has reportedly penned the most recent version of the script. Additionally, Kristin Burr and Lucy Kitada appear to be serving as producers for the film.

Other than that, details regarding how the live-action remake is progressing at Disney remain unclear. In the meantime, fans who wish to see Florence Pugh in action can catch her as Yelena Belova in Thunderbolts*, which rolls out in theatres on May 2, 2025.
