DCU’s Superman will soon release its first trailer, which will give fans a glimpse of the film’s plot. But before that, James Gunn has revealed a few story details about Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor. He confirmed where the film starts and whether it tells another Kal-El origin story.
James Gunn says Superman’s plot skips his origin story
Superman’s origin story has been depicted in live-action and animated formats several times. So, fans likely won’t see the destruction of Krypton or Clark’s childhood in the DCU. Similar to how Matt Reeves’ The Batman picked things up from year two, James Gunn’s Superman will also put us amid all the action.
Speaking with ComicBook, Gunn revealed where Superman is in his life when the movie starts. He said:
“Yeah, it was about really putting us in the middle of the action from the beginning. And there’s a lot of these things in this movie now that I’ve been making it for over a year that I think of as normal. But now when you bring it up, I go, ‘Oh yeah, that’s pretty unusual.’”
He continued, revealing key details about Superman, Lois, and Lex Luthor:
“We just start in the middle of the action. Superman already exists. Lois and Clark already know each other. Lex hates Superman’s guts from the beginning, although they don’t know each other personally. So we start right in the middle of the action. It takes place over a short amount of time.”
Seeing another Superman origin story would have been redundant for many. So, James Gunn’s take will present Superman in his prime, ready to take on everything Lex Luthor throws at him.
The film hits theaters on July 11, 2025. It features an all-star cast led by David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman. Rachel Brosnahan comes in as his love interest, Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult will be the big bad as Lex Luthor. Other supporting cast members include Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., and more.
