Report: Kraven’s Box Office Causes Sony to ‘Reset’ Its Spider-Man Universe

A new report claims that Sony is seemingly planning to reset its Spider-Man Universe after the poor box office debut of its latest release, Kraven the Hunter. The J.C. Chandor directorial, which features Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the titular role, faced a barrage of negative reviews from critics before its release on December 12. Although Taylor-Johnson is garnering praise for his efforts, critics seem unimpressed with the plotline of Kraven the Hunter.

Sony reportedly planning a reset after Kraven the Hunter’s box office failure

Sony is reportedly considering resetting its Spider-Man Universe after the disappointing opening of Kraven the Hunter at the box office.

According to a recent report by Deadline, this, however, does not include the Spiderverse projects and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies. Moreover, there have been no official comments from Sony. The outlet further mentioned that Kraven the Hunter has managed to earn around $11 million in its opening weekend. This makes it the weakest SSU movie in terms of debut collection.

The Aaron Taylor-Johnson movie falls behind Sony’s February 2024 release, Madame Web, which made around $15 million in its first weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. Additionally, Kraven the Hunter earned less than the 2022 movie Morbius as well, which garnered approximately $39 million in its debut at the box office.

With a reported budget of $110 million, critics are afraid that Kraven the Hunter will not be able to turn into a profitable venture for the studio. In Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, the most profitable movies have turned out to be the Venom trilogy, which ended with Venom: The Last Dance in October 2024. Thus, following the apparent failure of Kraven the Hunter, Sony might reconsider a reboot.

Previously, The Wrap reported that Sony is probably deciding on closing down its Spider-Man Universe projects for the time being. An insider revealed to the outlet, “They’ve developed what they want to develop for now. It’s really about the next Spider-Man film.”
