Early reactions to the upcoming Sony production Kraven the Hunter have been largely negative, with several of the first reviews of the movie echoing criticisms of previous Sony Spider-Man Universe films.
Kraven the Hunter is opening on Thursday, December 12, 2024, and its early box office predictions are also out. Made on a reported budget of $110 million, the movie is expected to open with around $13 million to $15 million in its first weekend.
Critics call Kraven the Hunter to be ‘clichéd’ and ‘not worth the ticket price’
Directed by JC Chandor and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular Spider-Man villain, Kraven the Hunter had its premiere in New York City recently. Following the event, many critics shared their reviews of the film.
In his review, Andrew J Salazar of Discussing Film called out Kraven the Hunter for its “choppy editing” and asserted that some scenes from the movie are meme-worthy. He wrote, “Not worth the ticket price, but there are like 3 scenes that I’m super excited to see as new memes.”
Leo Rydel from Geekly Goods lashed out at the acting performances and script of the movie. He added that Kraven the Hunter was “a waste of Aaron Taylor Johnson, who I actually enjoyed in the role! Wayyyy too quick, not a great story.”
In another review, The Direct’s Aeron Eclarinal labeled the movie “a disappointment.” He praised Taylor-Johnson for his efforts and stated, “KravenTheHunter is a complete mess. Everything else is quite forgettable, especially Rhino’s design.”
Additionally, writer and critic Chris Gallardo praised the action of Kraven the Hunter for being “fun.” However, he wrote, “Sony’s Spider-Man Universe doesn’t go with a bang, but a whimper. #KravenTheHunter is clichéd at all turns. ATJ tries to make the most of it, yet the script holds it back.”
