Booster Gold: James Gunn Offers Update on DCU Series

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has shared a long-awaited update on the forthcoming Booster Gold television series.

Who Is Booster Gold?

Created by writer/artist Dan Jurgens, Booster Gold debuted in Booster Gold #1 in February 1986 as Michael Jon Carter, a disgraced college football star from the year 2442 who steals time-traveling technology and journeys back to modern day in search of fame and fortune by staging various heroics as the superhero Booster Gold. The character eventually becomes a legit hero in the DC Comics Universe, going on to join the Justice League.

Booster Gold has appeared in several animated films and series, notably Justice League Unlimited and Justice League Action. A variation of the superhero also appeared in the series finale of Legends of Tomorrow, played by Donald Faison. A live-action Booster Gold series was announced in January 2023 by DC Studios as part of the first wave of DC Universe content. While not much has been officially revealed about the series since then, Gunn recently offered a much-needed update on the project during a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

After being asked by the podcast’s host Josh Horowitz if Booster Gold was close to getting greenlit, Gunn admitted, “We’re not quite there yet in terms of Booster Gold,” going on to explain that the “scripts quite aren’t where I want them to be.”

He continued, “From the beginning, I’ve made it clear that the one thing that we’re going to do at DC is no matter what we’re going to wait until the screenplays and the teleplays are ready before we shoot them. And I’m not going to shoot anything until I’m happy with it.”

Horowitz also mentioned the rumors stating that Kumail Nanjiani had been cast as Booster Gold. Unfortunately, Gunn skirted around the casting rumor entirely, leaving it up in the air whether Nanjiani is attached to the role or not.

Booster Gold is expected to premiere during Chapter 1 of the DCU, which has been titled Gods and Monsters.
