Plastic Man: Popular Fan Pick John Mulaney Reveals If He’d Play the DC Superhero

Comedian-actor John Mulaney is down to play the DC superhero Plastic Man, but only if Warner Bros. cuts him a nice, fat paycheck.

Mulaney recently took part in GQ’s “Actually Me” series, where he answers questions related to himself that fans have asked from across the web like Reddit, Instagram, and YouTube. On the Reddit page, r/DC_Cinematic, Mulaney read a post suggesting himself or fellow SNL alum Pete Davidson for the role of Plastic Man.

“I know who Pete and I are, and I don’t know what the rest of that means,” he initially stated.

“Is Plastic Man a DC comic? If you know the answer, call my personal phone,” he continued before revealing that he’d be open to the role but only because he’s heard that they come with large paydays. “It’d be a money thing. Honestly, I can answer for Pete as well, it’d be a money thing. Apparently, these movies pay a lot, these action hero things, but that is also changing in today’s ever-evolving media landscape.”

Who Is Plastic Man?

Patrick “Eel” O’Brian/Plastic Man was created by Jack Cole and first appeared in Police Comics #1, published in 1941. Originally owned by Quality Comics, the superhero, whose powers include being able to stretch and transform his body into virtually any shape, was acquired by DC Comics in 1956 and subsequently incorporated into its universe.

While Plastic Man has been part of countless animated adaptations, the comical hero has yet to appear in a live-action project, although not for a lack of trying. The Wachowskis wrote a screenplay for a potential Plastic Man movie in 1995, although the project never made it out of development at Warner Bros. Another crack at the hero was attempted in 2018, but ultimately went nowhere.

A Plastic Man movie has been rumored for the DC Universe, which is being spearheaded by DC Studios boss James Gunn, but nothing has been officially announced at this time. Besides Mulaney, a popular fan pick for the role of Plastic Man has been Ben Schwartz, who is best known for his scene-stealing performance as Jean-Ralphio in Parks and Recreation and for voicing Sonic the Hedgehog in Paramount’s live-action/CG movies.

The DCU officially kicks off on December 5, 2024, with Creature Commandos on Max.
