James Gunn Gives Creature Commandos’ Production Update & Reveals Lead Director

The DCU co-head James Gunn recently revealed the current state of production of the upcoming animated show Creature Commandos in a series of posts on Threads. He also explained that he was not the director of the series and disclosed the name of the person who served as the lead director on the project.

James Gunn reveals that Creature Commandos production is ‘almost wrapped’

In the comment section of a post claiming that Creature Commandos had wrapped production, Gunn posted, “Well, almost wrapped,” clarifying that it was still ongoing. When one fan enquired how many complete episodes there were now, Gunn responded, “A hair away from 7.” As the series is supposed to have seven episodes in total, it’s safe to assume that the production will conclude very soon.

Gunn also made it clear that he was not directing Creature Commandos. “I’m also not director on Creature Commandos for the record,” he posted. “I only directed the primary actors voice recordings and oversaw the proceedings. Another group of talented folks directed the episodes, and @deanlorey [Dean Lorey] led the charge,” Gunn added.

Notably, Lorey’s previous credits include My Wife and Kids, Arrested Development, and iZombie. He has also served as an executive producer and writer on the animated series Harley Quinn and its spin-off, Kite Man: Hell Yeah!

Gunn may not be the director of Creature Commandos, but he is its writer and executive producer. Some prominent members of the show’s voice cast are Steve Agee as John Economos, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Indira Varma as the Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

Creature Commandos follows the titular team of monsters that Waller assembles as she can no longer put human lives in danger. In June 2024, Gunn explained his vision for what is to be the first-ever DCU project. “It’s a cornerstone of the legacy we’ve been entrusted to carry at DC Studios and plays an integral role in the vision for our future storytelling,” he said in a video message at this year’s Annecy Animation Festival. Creatures Commands premieres on Max on December 5, 2024.
