Agatha All Along Creator on Whether Death & Thanos Are Connected in the MCU

Agatha All Along Episode 7 reveals that Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal is Death, the original Green Witch. Following this confirmation, there has been considerable fan speculation over whether Agatha All Along will establish a connection between Death and Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Jac Schaeffer, the creator and showrunner of the Disney Plus series, gave an update on the theory in a recent interview.

Jac Schaeffer has ‘no answers’ for Death and Thanos connections in Agatha All Along

Schaeffer stated in a new interview that she had “no answers” for the “Thanos stans” on the romantic prospects of their favorite character in the MCU. Notably, in the comics, Thanos is enamored with Death, the cosmic entity that is the personification of death. His primary objective behind wiping out half of the universe’s population in Marvel Comics’ Infinity Gauntlet storyline is demonstrating his love for the cosmic being. The MCU drastically altered this, establishing that Thanos wanted to destroy half of all life in the universe to attempt to create universal stability.

While speaking to Inverse, Schaeffer clarified that Thanos wasn’t part of Agatha All Along. “Thanos is not in my show, so I can’t speak to any Thanos connections,” she said. “Thanos stans out there, I have no answers for you.”

While the MCU has stayed away from adapting the romantic connection between Thanos and Death, the latter’s existence in the fictional universe was hinted at in multiple entries in the franchise. In Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) finds the infinity-stone-containing orb in the ruins of a temple on planet Morag. The murals on the temple wall depict Death, Entropy, Infinity, and Eternity, the cosmic beings who made the infinity stones. Further, Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) features a statue of Death located in the Alter of Eternity.

In the same interview, Schaeffer teased that more would be revealed about the MCU’s Death in the two-episode finale of the series. “There will be a little bit more illuminating about our version of Death, but what I will say is we generally leave some of it to interpretation in this show,” she mentioned. “But you’ll get a little bit more understanding of how she operates in the last two episodes.”
