Report: X-Men ’97 Season 2 Release Date Pushed to 2026

Amidst the controversy surrounding series creator Beau DeMayo’s firing from X-Men ’97, recent reports claim that the release date for the sophomore season has been pushed to 2026. X-Men ’97, which serves as a revival of X-Men: The Animated Series (1992–1997), premiered on Disney+ on March 20, 2024, and was received well both by the critics and the general audience. Accordingly, this report, if true, is bound to disappoint the fans.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 release date reportedly delayed for rewrites

X-Men ’97 Season 2 will not come out until 2026, according to a report by Nexus Point News. The outlet cited sources to claim that the story and scripts were undergoing rewrites, resulting in the delay.

Nexus Point News previously broke the news about Josh Brolin being courted by the DCU to join the cast of the Lanterns series.

Back in July 2022, X-Men ’97 had already been confirmed for Season 2. A year later, DeMayo revealed that they were writing the finale of the second season. “[Production] is going really, really well,” he said. “We’re just in post-production on Season 1 and [right now] writing the finale for Season 2. I cannot be happier,” he added.

DeMayo completed writing Season 2 in March 2024. However, Marvel Studios fired him ahead of the series premiere, and since then, both sides have put forth their sides of the issue.

At present, Season 2 is in production. Multiple voice actors, including Ross Marquand, who voices Professor X, have announced that they have wrapped recording for season 2.

If the news of the delay is true, it’s unclear whether Marvel’s decision to do so has any connection to the DeMayo controversy. The studio brought in Matthew Chauncey, who has previously worked on What If…?, to replace DeMayo as the writer for the third season, which is currently in development. It’s also unclear what role, if any, Chauncey will play in the season 2 rewritings.
