Deadpool & Wolverine has proven to be a cultural revelation among fans, majorly due to its unique humor and carefully planned cameos. Despite recalling a ton of legacy superheroes of the past, the movie still left out several pivotal characters from the now-defunct Fox Marvel universe. One such variant that did not get to return in Deadpool & Wolverine was Liev Schreiber’s Sabretooth. Although the character did make a brief appearance in the film, it was portrayed by Tyler Mane. Now, in a recent discussion, Schreiber opened up about passing on the chance to don his iconic claws again.
Liev Schreiber on not returning as Sabretooth in Deadpool & Wolverine
Schreiber explained that he was extremely grateful for fans’ love but cited the physically demanding nature of the character for his omission from Deadpool 3.
While talking to Collider, Liev Schreiber stated that he was surprised to see people asking about his return as Sabretooth in Deadpool & Wolverine. “It’s amazing,” the 56-year-old actor said.
“I can’t begin to tell you what it feels like when people are thinking about something you did and are so appreciative of it that they want you to do it again. I was so surprised that people were campaigning for me to be in the new Deadpool movie,” he added.
Liev Schreiber also clarified the reason why he decided not to make an appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. The character of Sabretooth inherently requires a brawny actor to play the part, similar to his on-screen half-brother, Wolverine. However, Schreiber was seemingly hesitant to put his body through strenuous training for the role.
“To be honest, it’s a lot of work getting your body up to that point,” the Ray Donovan star revealed. “I know I watched Hugh [Jackman] get himself ready again, and I thought, ‘I’m okay to sit by the sidelines,'” he added.
The Tony Award winner is currently occupied with promoting his latest film, Across the River and Into the Trees. The war drama draws inspiration from a 1950 Ernest Hemingway novel of the same name and features Schreiber as the lead.
