Cobie Smulders ‘Didn’t Know’ About Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Maria Hill Twist

Cobie Smulders recently revealed that she was completely unaware of the plot twist that occurred with her character of Maria Hill towards the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Tom Holland’s second solo outing as MCU’s web-slinger served as the first movie in the franchise’s post-Avengers: Endgame era. The film also introduced the concept of the multiverse, helping Marvel end Phase Three and kickstart Phase Four. As such, the Jon Watts directorial feature contained several narrative aspects that ended up surprising the audience. From the looks of it, one such plot point was also kept hidden from the actors.

Cobie Smulders didn’t know Maria Hill was a Skrull in Spider-Man: Far From Home

According to Cobie Smulders, she only learned of Maria Hill being a Skrull once filming on Spider-Man: Far From Home had wrapped.

The 2019 flick saw Spider-Man take on the villainous Elementals, a group of extraterrestrial beings hell-bent on destroying worlds. As a consequence, Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury recruit the web crawler to join forces with Quentin Beck, a superhero from an alternate reality. However, it was later disclosed that Beck was actually the nefarious mastermind behind everything. Later, in a post-credits scene, Smulders’ character is revealed to have been a Skrull throughout the course of the film.

While addressing fans during the Terrificon 2024, the Secret Invasion actress stated that she was initially oblivious to this twist. “I wasn’t really me. I didn’t know that until the end, until we had finished shooting,” recalled Smulders. “[Marvel Studios] let me know. They were like, ‘Just so you know, we were gonna do this thing,'” she added.

Cobie Smulders also shed light on why Marvel wanted to keep Maria Hill’s true nature a secret. “They wanted me to play it [normally],” she said. “Even if I knew the whole time, I think we still would be playing the reality of the day-to-day,” Smulders further stated. (via ComicBook.com)

Alongside Hill, Nick Fury was also revealed to have been a Skrull in the movie’s post-credits scene. These developments directly led to the events of the Secret Invasion series, which premiered on Disney Plus on June 21, 2023.
