Star Wars’ Ewan McGregor Talks Lying About Obi-Wan

Ewan McGregor is getting ready to dust off his lightsaber as he will reprise his role in an Obi-Wan series for Disney+. The recently confirmed project will likely begin filming in 2020, before hitting Disney+ at some point in the future. Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live, McGregor confessed the difficulty he had in lying for years about his upcoming Star Wars project.

“It got difficult,” McGregor said. “I was brought up to tell the truth and I was in the situation where I wasn’t really allowed to because the studios and the big franchises, they want to keep everything very secret. At the same time, there is this overwhelming amount of speculation online, on social media and what. Wherever I went for the last 15 years, people would ask me: ‘So would you do it again?’ and ‘Would you do it?’ Once they started doing spin-offs, of course everybody was like: ‘Are you going to do an Obi-Wan spin-off?’ I was talking to Lucasfilm and Disney about that, but I couldn’t say that I was. So I had to go like: ‘Well, you know, if they wanted to do it, why I wouldn’t interested in doing it?’ It started looking like I was just trying to get the part.”

Then McGregor spoke about the “William Shatner moment” he had at D23 in August, when he took the stage as his Obi-Wan series was being announced, confessing that he was inspired by William Shatner on the set of Star Wars.

“Shatner wrote a book called Get a Life,” McGregor added. “His life was in a difficult place, and he went to his first Star Trek convention and he was overwhelmed by this sense of love from the people, and it changed his life. Ahmed Best, who played Jar Jar Binks, and I ordered it on the set of Star Wars. We would read it on the set of Star Wars. I just loved the idea of a book by William Shatner called Get a Life.”
