As we proceed to the Game of Thrones grand finale, HBO isn’t ready to let go of the world of Westeros just yet, putting five different spin-offs in various stages of development. In a recent interview with THR, series writer and executive producer Bryan Cogman spoke about episode 3 of HBO drama’s final season and revealed the spin-off he was working on wasn’t moving forward.
“I’m definitely leaving” Cogman added. “I was developing one of the successor shows with George [R.R. Martin]. George has worked with a bunch of the writers, including Jane [Goldman], whose show is being done [as a pilot]. My prequel show is not happening and will not happen. HBO decided to go a different way. I’m working with Amazon now and helping them out with their shows. So, it is a goodbye. I am done with Westeros. It’s wonderfully bittersweet. I’ll certainly miss it, but I’m excited to go out on my own and try to be in the captain’s chair of my own projects, armed with everything I’ve learned. I’ve learned more than I could possibly imagine from eight seasons of this thing. It’s been wonderful to look back and watch some of the old episodes, and see some of our old friends at the premiere recently, and to know that we’ve done something good.“

The pilot for the Game of Thrones prequel series is created by Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman) and GOT author George R.R. Martin, written by Goldman based on a story by her and Martin. The untitled pilot takes the prequel concept to a new level as it is set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones. The series chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.
Game of Thrones airs Sunday, April 28.
