Japanese Metal Band Babymetal Is Getting A Graphic Novel

The all female Japanese metal band, Babymetal, is getting their own graphic novel to be released in October. Apocrypha: The Legend of Baby Metal aims to bring to life, and expand upon, the group’s fictional mythology that has been created over the last eight years. The official synopsis for the graphic novel breaks down what we are to expect when it launches:

“Discover the myth of the worldwide music sensation BABYMETAL. Tasked with defeating the forces of darkness and division, the metal spirits must travel through a variety of eras of time, assuming different forms and identities. What we are seeing is not the BABYMETAL of the present. It’s the original story based on BABYMETAL you’ve never heard before. The long-hidden spirit’s apocrypha of the METAL RESISTANCE will emerge.”

Apocrypha will make it’s first appearance at New York Comic Con next month. Artist GMB Chomichuk will be present for the Apocrypha panel on October 4. Z2 Comics, the graphic novel’s publisher, will also have a booth selling three limited-edition promotional posters whose artwork can be seen in the gallery below thanks to THR.

Babymetal is currently on a world tour with their latest unique style of musical-driven narrative, “the Chosen Seven”. Formed in 2010, the group has grown to international fame with their unique style of metal coined “kawaii metal”. The band features three young women, Su-Metal, Yuimetal, and Moametal, and blends heavy metal with Japanese pop in miraculous fashion. They have released two albums and have found fantastic success with critics, who have praised them for their innovative and creative take on metal music. While some metal purists disagree, the women strongly believe in doing what they love and making the music their own. Babymetal has become iconic for people around the world and fans, known as “The One”, have even cosplayed as the ban’s members thanks to their eccentric costumes and appearance.

Apocrypha releases at the end of October in two different editions: the basic edition for $24.99 and a limited, 500-copy Deluxe Edition which will run you $199.99 and comes with a copy of the book signed by Chomichuk and three original prints all packaged inside a 10-by-16 clamshell box.
