A first look at Krypto has been shared by Superman writer-director James Gunn, confirming that the beloved superdog will appear in the upcoming DC Universe movie.
“Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer,” revealed Gunn in a post on social media. “Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog month. Btw, Ozu today, is, fairly often, a very good boy.”
Check out the first look moving image, which shows David Corenswet‘s Superman and Krypto sitting on the moon and staring at the rotating Earth, an image of Gunn with Ozu, and the comic book panel that inspired the DCU teaser image in Gunn’s social media post below:
Who is Krypto the Superdog?
Created by Otto Binder and Curt Swan, Krypto the Superdog first appeared in Adventure Comics #210 back in 1955. Typically depicted as a White Sheperd dog, Krypto was the pet of Kal-El back when they were both still on Krypton. Jor-El used Krypto as the test subject for the prototype rocket that would eventually send his son, Kal-El, to Earth. However, his rocket was knocked off course, leading Krypto to not arrive on Earth until long after Kal-El had been adopted by the Kents.
Krypto has been part of several superhero teams in the comics, most notably the Space Canine Patrol Agents and the Legion of Super-Pets. The latter was adapted into an animated film in 2022 titled DC League of Super-Pets, starring Dwayne Johnson as the voice of Krypto. While Gunn’s Superman movie will serve as Krypto’s live-action movie debut, the character previously appeared in the live-action series Smallville and Titans.
Written and directed by Gunn, Superman will be the first theatrical installment in the DCU, a soft reboot of the previous franchise, DC Extended Universe. Besides Corenswet, other cast members for Superman include Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White, among others.
Superman is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
