Wonder Woman franchise director Patty Jenkins breaks her silence about her exit from the unproduced third DCEU installment and what she expects for Diana Prince’s future on the big screen.
During an interview on TCM’s Talking Pictures podcast, Jenkins confirmed that her time as the director of the Wonder Woman franchise is finished “for the time being, but probably, easily forever.” When asked if DC Studios has plans to move forward on the film without her, Jenkins shared disappointing news regarding further stories about the Amazonian. “No. They’re not interested in doing any Wonder Woman for the time being,” Jenkins replied.
Jenkins directed Wonder Woman’s first solo movie starring Gal Gadot in 2017. Coming off the heels of some polarizing DCEU movies, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman earned strong praise from critics and amassed $824 million worldwide. The 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, however, divided critics and failed to make a profit due to the HBO Max home release strategy. Despite Wonder Woman 3 being announced by Warner Bros. shortly after the sequel’s release with Jenkins and Gadot expected to return, the project was canceled after James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed to run DC Studios.
“It’s not an easy task, what’s going on with DC,” Jenkins said. “James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans. So I don’t know the why of what they’re planning on doing or why, so I have sympathy for what a big job it is, and they have to follow their heart and do what they’re interested in, and do what they’ve got planned.”
DC Studios’ Paradise Lost
While the character of Diana Prince gets put on ice for the time being, DC Studios plans to move forward on the prequel series Paradise Lost for Max. Promoted as a political drama in the style of Game of Thrones set several years before the birth of Diana, the series will explore the Amazonians and their power struggle in Themyscira.
Paradise Lost does not have a release date.
