Ewan McGregor Would ‘Love’ to Make Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2, Talks Star Wars Prequels

Despite initially being “reluctant” to play Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels, Ewan McGregor says he’d love to do a second season of the Disney+ series.

Speaking with Variety, McGregor said that, while there’s been no official word on the matter from Disney or Lucasfilm at this time, he’s ready and willing to star in a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

“I would love to do the second season, but there’s no talk of it yet. There is a lot going on at Disney,” he said.

Ewan McGregor reflects on the Star Wars prequels

Reflecting on what it was like to play Obi-Wan in the Star Wars prequels, McGregor said, “It wasn’t a done deal for me. I didn’t think it was at all who I was. I believed, at that point, I was a Danny Boyle actor. The Beach was more important and I meant it, it wasn’t flippant. I did ask a lot of people for advice.”

He added, “I am happy that I am this character for a lot of people, but when these films came out, they were so disliked. That was hard. The first one was panned and we still had to make another two! It was weird to be in a film that was hammered.”

Prior to starring in 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, McGregor was primarily known for his role as Mark Renton in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting. He was attached to star in 2000’s The Beach but left the project after he had a falling out with Boyle. The two later became reacquainted and made T2 Trainspotting together in 2017.

Following 2002’s Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones and 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, McGregor reprised his Star Wars role in Obi-Wan Kenobi, which was released in 2022 and is currently streaming on Disney+.
