Dune Returning to IMAX With Sequel Sneak Peek

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is heading back to IMAX theaters for one night only later this month.

The official X (formerly Twitter) account for Dune recently announced that the acclaimed 2021 epic science fiction movie will be returning “exclusively to IMAX for ONE NIGHT ONLY on January 24. Experience Denis Villeneuve’s film the way it was meant to be seen.” The special event will also feature a sneak peek at Dune: Part Two ahead of its theatrical release on March 1, 2024.

Originally released in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22, 2021, Dune adapts the first half of Frank Herbert’s acclaimed 1965 novel, which was previously adapted into a 1984 film by David Lynch. Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune: Part Two will adapt the remainder of the novel, following Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.

Who stars in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series?

Timothée Chalamet leads the Dune cast as Paul Atreides, with Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson portraying his parents, Duke Leto Atreides and Lady Jessica, respectively. The cast also includes Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, and Zendaya as Chani. Stellan Skarsgård plays Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, leader of House Harkonnen, while Dave Bautista and Austin Butler portray his nephews Glossu Rabban and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, respectively.

While Dune: Part Two will conclude Villeneuve’s adaptation of Herbert’s first Dune novel, the franchise won’t stop there. Villeneuve has already revealed that he has plans to adapt the second novel in the series, Dune: Messiah, into a feature film.

“The screenplay is almost finished but it is not finished,” he said in December 2023. “It will take a little time . . . .There’s a dream of making a third movie . . . it would make absolute sense to me.”

Dune returns to IMAX theaters on January 24, 2024, ahead of Dune: Part Two’s release on March 1, 2024.
