What do we know about the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel?

Currently under the working title “Firehouse,” the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel marks the fifth theatrically released movie in the Ghostbusters franchise following 1984’s Ghostbusters, 1989’s Ghostbusters II, 2016’s Ghostbusters (which is a reboot with a separate continuity), and 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

The movie is being directed by Gil Kenan, who previously made 2006’s Monster House, 2008’s City of Ember, the 2015 Poltergeist remake, and 2021’s A Boy Called Christmas. Kenan wrote the script with Jason Reitman, who directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife and whose father, Ivan Reitman, directed the first two Ghostbusters movies.

Not much is known about the plot at this time, apart from that the logo sees the No-Ghost Sign surrounded by ice, suggesting it may be set in winter/around Christmas.

The film will see Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, William Atherton, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Logan Kim, and Celeste O’Connor all reprise their respective Ghostbusters roles. Additionally, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind have been cast in undisclosed roles.

Filming for the movie wrapped in June 2023, approximately one month before the start of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike.

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel currently has a March 29, 2024, release date from Sony Pictures. It was previously scheduled to come out in December 2023 but pushed its release date back due to the actors strike.
