Sony’s upcoming Madame Web solo film just landed its biggest star yet. According to Deadline, Adam Scott is joining the cast of the studio’s next MCU-adacent Marvel flick. Unfortunately, the identity of his character remains a mystery for now.
Earlier this week, Scott earned his very first Emmy nomination for his role in Apple TV+’s Severance, which many critics have hailed as one of the best new shows of the year. But Scott is most widely known for his five-year stint as Ben Wyatt on Parks and Recreation. Scott is also set to return to the world of Party Down for an upcoming revival series on Starz, which wrapped production in March.
Dakota Johnson is headlining the Madame Web movie as the titular blind psychic. However, it’s still unclear if Johnson is playing Cassandra Webb, her successor (and former Spider-Woman) Julia Carpenter, or a completely new version of the character. Whatever the case, Sony is reportedly developing the film as their answer to Marvel’s Doctor Strange franchise. Deadline’s sources also indicate that because Cassandra never did much real fighting in the comics due to her age and health issues, Sony could be making a few significant changes to her backstory.

S.J. Clarkson is directing Madame Web from a screenplay by Morbius writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama, who rewrote an earlier draft by Kerem Sanga. The film recently began shooting with a supporting cast that also includes Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, and Mike Epps. So far, our biggest clues to the nature of the plot come from new set photos in Boston, with many streets doubling for early 2000s New York.
Madame Web will hit theaters on July 7, 2023.
