Leigh Whannell In Talks To Direct The Green Hornet and Kato

It’s been over two years since Universal Pictures picked up the rights to make The Green Hornet and Kato, but there haven’t been many meaningful updates since then. However, Deadline is reporting that the reboot may finally have a director. The Invisible Man helmer Leigh Whannell is in talks to direct the upcoming adaptation of George W. Trendle and Fran Striker’s classic pulp heroes.

According to the report, Universal “wanted to get back in business with [Whannell] after he delivered Invisible Man pic to critical acclaim and box-office success.” It also notes that Spider-Man scribe David Koepp submitted his script for the film earlier this year, and it may be fast-tracked for pre-production once Whannell signs on.

Whannell has only directed three films to date, including The Invisible Man, Upgrade, and  Insidious: Chapter 3. He is primarily known as the screenwriter for James Wan’s Saw, Dead Silence, and the first two Insidious movies.

Green Hornet is a hero who predates Batman by three years, although he hasn’t enjoyed the same sustained success of his successor. The Green Hornet is the alter ego of newspaper publisher Britt Reid. His bodyguard and friend, Kato, works alongside him as they infiltrate the criminal underworld to bring it down from within. That’s another key difference between this duo and Batman. The criminals believe that Green Hornet is one of them. Van Williams and Bruce Lee starred in the Green Hornet TV series in the ’60s. In 2011, Seth Rogen and Jay Chou played Green Hornet and Kato for the most recent cinematic adaptation.

Amasia Entertainment co-founders Michael Helfant and Bradley Gallo are producing The Green Hornet and Kato. However, a date for the film has not been announced.
