Before any Godzilla vs. Kong sequel decides to venture full-time into the Hollow Earth, it looks like Disney may get there first. Beginning like an old-fashioned adventure serial, and segueing into a bizarre creature-scape, the first Strange World teaser appears to offer the latest twist on Journey to the Center of the Earth. Like most such adaptations, it looks to not just offer adventurers finding monsters, but also plays fast and loose with gravity.

If that weren’t enough of a retro feel, the newly revealed poster crystallizes it. Here’s a look:

Disney’s definitely going for a more four-quadrant blockbuster feel here than cartoon just for kids. They’ve previously done Jules Verne-style adventure with the underrated Atlantis, but the likely success of Pixar’s Lightyear may have emboldened them to try straightforward sci-fi adventure again.
Here’s the latest official synopsis: “Jake Gyllenhaal…lends his voice to Searcher Clade, the son of a steadfast explorer. The original action-adventure journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades, a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest—and by far— most crucial mission.”
Well, it wouldn’t be Disney if it didn’t somehow involve families resolving their differences. Strange World opens Nov 23.
