Sony’s Madame Web Movie Adds Celeste O’Connor in a Mystery Role

The cast of Sony’s first female-led Marvel movie continues to fill out its ranks with young talent. According to Deadline, Celeste O’Connor has landed a role in Sony’s upcoming Madame Web standalone film. However, the studio isn’t sharing any details regarding the role.

O’Connor recently appeared as Lucky in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and also had a role in 2020’s Freaky. Earlier this year, O’Connor co-starred in the Paramount+ original film The In Between. Next up, O’Connor will play a supporting role in A Good Person from writer/director Zach Braff.

Sony has been developing a Madame Web film since 2019. Back in February, Dakota Johnson officially signed on to headline the movie as the titular blind psychic. However, it’s unclear if Johnson will portray Cassandra Web, or her much younger successor, Julia Carpenter. The older Madame Web was supporting character in the Spider-Man comics before she perished. She also appeared in several episodes of the ‘90s Spider-Man cartoon, as voiced by Joan Lee (wife of Stan). Regardless, Sony’s film will mark the first time that Madame Web has been given top billing in any medium.

So far, the film’s only other cast member is Sydney Sweeney, who joined the film back in March. S.J. Clarkson is directing Madame Web from a screenplay by Morbius writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. Kerem Sanga previously wrote an earlier draft of the script. The movie is one of two live-action Marvel features that Sony currently has lined up for 2023. J.C Chandor’s Kraven the Hunter spinoff, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is scheduled for release on January 13.

Madame Web will hit theaters on July 7, 2023.
