Friendship Knows No Bounds in the New Brian and Charles Trailer

The unlikely bond between a human and a robot is fairly well-tread ground in the sci-fi realm. Regardless, one film aims to put a fresh spin on the genre with a quirky story about friendship and belonging. Focus Features has just released the first trailer for Brian and Charles, which you can watch for yourself below.

Presented as a mockumentary-style comedy, Brian and Charles might be too niche for the average sci-fi fan. But the film definitely made an impact when it opened to rave reviews at Sundance earlier this year. British comedian David Earl stars as Brian, a lonely inventor who is always coming up with bizarre gadgets. Very few of these actually end up working. However, Brian’s luck changes when he builds his most ambitious contraption yet: a robot with a doll’s head and a washing machine for a body. Brian names the robot Charles (voiced by Chris Hayward) and they set about having as much fun together as possible.

In addition to co-headlining the movie, Earl and Hayward adapted the script from their 2017 short film of the same name. The short’s director, Jim Archer, helmed the feature-length version as well. Some fans might recognize Earl from his appearances in several Ricky Gervais projects, including Netflix’s After Life. Fortunately, it looks like he’s bringing that same awkward charisma to his portrayal of Brian, which should make for a number of standout moments as he travels across the English countryside with his new robot companion

Brian and Charles will hit theaters on June 17.
