Taika Waititi Reveals How Jane Foster’s Return Will Affect Thor

Aside from a brief cameo in Avengers: Endgame, Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster hasn’t made a live-action appearance in the MCU for almost a decade. Sometime between 2013’s Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane parted ways. However, they will soon be reunited in Thor: Love and Thunder. But this time, in a nod to her comic book counterpart, Jane will also have the power of Thor after proving herself worthy of wielding Mjolnir. however, we still have questions about who reforged Thor’s hammer and why they did it.

In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi didn’t mince words about how Jane’s comeback will affect Thor himself.

“It’s been about eight years,” said Waititi. “She’s had a whole other life, and then the love of your life comes back on the scene, and is now dressed like you. It’s a real mindf*** for Thor.”

Additionally, Empire debuted a new image of Jane as the Mighty Thor, alongside the original Odinson himself.

“I didn’t know we were going to use the storyline of the Mighty Thor character until we started working out the actual story,” added Waititi. “I was writing and it was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be kind of cool to bring Jane back into the storyline?’”

“You don’t want Natalie coming back and playing that same character who’s walking around with science equipment,” continued Waititi. “You know, while Thor’s flying around, she’s left on Earth, tapping her foot going, ‘When’s he going to be back?’ That’s boring. You want her to be part of the adventure.”

It won’t take too long to see how it all plays out. Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters just over two months from today, on Friday, July 8.
