Back in February, word broke that HBO Max is planning a Wonder Twins original movie. And apparently it’s happening much sooner than expected, since the leading roles have already been filled. Via The Wrap, KJ Apa has been cast Zan, while Isabel May has been cast as his sister, Jayna.
The Wonder Twins are a pair of alien siblings who were created in 1977 for The All-New Super Friends Hour. They were sidekicks to the Super Friends and audience surrogate characters. Separately, the twins have no powers of their own. But when they make physical contact, Zan can change into liquid forms while Jayna can transform into various animals. They also had a space monkey named Gleek.
Apa is best known for playing Archie Andrews for six seasons on The CW’s Riverdale. He has also appeared in The Hate U Give, A Dog’s Purpose, Songbird, and he is slated to star in the upcoming film, West Pointer. May recently led the cast of the Yellowstone prequel series, 1883. Her prior credits include Young Sheldon and the Netflix original series, Alexa & Katie.

It’s unclear if the Wonder Twins movie will be a comedy or a more serious take on the characters. Although Zan and Jayna have been incorporated into DC’s comic book universe, they have rarely been taken seriously as heroes. Essentially, they have never fully shed their Super Friends image. But they have appeared in The Flash and Smallville.
Black Adam screenwriter Adam Sztykiel is writing and directing Wonder Twins. The film will begin production this summer in Atlanta. HBO Max hasn’t set a premiere date for it yet.
