Will Smith Wants To See David Ayer’s Cut of Suicide Squad

Zack Snyder’s Justice League was a big hit for Warner Bros. last year. Regardless, the studio still doesn’t seem to have any plans to release David Ayer’s original cut of Suicide Squad. Up until last summer, Ayer was very vocal about how WB drastically altered his version of the movie during post-production. And while he appears to have moved on, perhaps one of the film’s biggest stars can help move the needle in his favor. Will Smith wants.

Will Smith, who played Floyd Lawton/Deadshot in Suicide Squad, briefly discussed Ayer’s plans for the movie while speaking with Variety on the red carpet for Peacock’s Bel-Air. He backed up Ayer’s earlier remarks about certain scenes being cut from the film. But more importantly, he supported the release of Ayer’s original vision for Task Force X.

“Let me tell you, there’s a whole lot that stayed on the floor for Suicide Squad,” said Smith. “I’m into it. I love that world [and] I love what was created in both versions. I absolutely would love to [see it].”

Zack Snyder’s Justice League primarily owes its existence to fans who spent years championing the film’s release on social media. However, the movement picked up extra steam when several Justice League stars co-opted the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut hashtag themselves, including Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot. So it’s possible that Smith’s endorsement could have a similar effect. Ayer has said that his ideal version of Suicide Squad would be “easy” to finish. But around the same time that James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad hit theaters last year, he issued one final disavowal of the theatrical cut before putting the matter to bed for good.

Smith, for his part, still hasn’t ruled out a return as Deadshot in future DCEU projects. Unfortunately, a scheduling conflict kept this from happening in The Suicide Squad.
