What If…? Composer Laura Karpman is Scoring The Marvels

Marvel is turning to a familiar composer to work on Carol Danvers’ next big screen adventure. According to Variety, the studio has recruited Laura Karpman to compose the music for The Marvels.

The highly-anticipated sequel marks Karpman’s second project for Marvel Studios after scoring Disney+’s What If…? animated series last year. She will also return for What If…? season 2, which doesn’t have a release date. Additionally, Karpman composed the music HBO’s Lovecraft Country and won an Emmy in 2020 for her work on the Discovery Channel documentary series Why We Hate. Karpman is notably just the second woman to score an MCU feature. The first was Pinar Toprak, who worked on the original Captain Marvel in 2019.

“I am thrilled to be going on this wild adventure with Nia DaCosta and Carol Danvers and am really looking forward to the collaboration,” said Karpman in a new statement.

Fans undoubtedly have their own opinions about how memorable Toprak’s Captain Marvel themes were. Regardless, her score was overshadowed by the abundance of throwback songs to fit the movie’s 1995 setting. But since the sequel takes place in the present day, it’s likely that Karpman’s music will take priority over a conventional soundtrack.

DaCosta is directing The Marvels from a screenplay by Megan McDonnell, who previously worked on two episodes of Disney+’s WandaVision. Brie Larson is returning as Carol Danvers and will share top-billing alongside Teyonah Parris as the grown-up Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, who will make her MCU debut as Ms. Marvel later this year.

The Marvels will hit theaters on February 17, 2023.
