Spider-Man: No Way Home Star Talks Joys and Stresses of Lying to Fans

WARNING: If you are still trying to avoid Spider-Man: No Way Home spoilers, click away! This article spotlights a major casting surprise.

Not every actor knows how to keep secrets. It’s entirely possible Sony might have tried to hide Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s multiverse villain angle, but for one small problem. Early on, Alfred Molina told people he was in it as Doc Ock. Knowing they couldn’t hide him, the studio featured him in trailers. But other actors managed it a bit better. Andrew Garfield, for example, flat-out lied many times. Asked about a possible return as Peter Parker at every press junket for every other movie he made this year, the actor insisted he absolutely would not appear in No Way Home. Which, of course, was a lie. And in an interview with The Wrap, he recently discussed what it was like lying to fans.

“There were moments where I was like, ‘God, I hate lying,'” he revealed. “I don’t like to lie and I’m not a good liar, but I kept framing it as a game. And I kept imagining myself purely as a fan of that character, which is not hard to do. I placed myself in that position of, Well, what would I want to know? Would I want to be toyed with? Would I want to be lied to? Would I want to be kept on my toes guessing? Would I want to discover it when I went to the theater? Would I want to be guessing, guessing, guessing?”

In the end, he came to the conclusion most fans likely would have, saying, “I would want the actor to do an incredibly good job at convincing me he wasn’t in it. And then I would want to lose my mind in the theater when my instinct was proven right. That’s what I would want.”

All the fans who did indeed lose their minds are surely grateful.

Did you believe Garfield when he lied? Are you glad he did? Let us know your thoughts in comments.
