Even during COVID times, it’s hard to think of a movie that’s been hit with as many delays as Morbius. Although it was really starting to look as though the film would finally to hit theaters later this month, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Sony’s next Marvel flick isn’t going to make its January 28 premiere date. Instead, the studio has pushed it all the way back to April 1. Morbius’ release.
This marks the seventh time that Morbius has been postponed. Sony originally planned to release the movie in July 2020. However, the onset of the coronavirus forced the studio to re-think its strategy. Over the last year, the film has moved everywhere from March to October before settling on its previous January window.
THR doesn’t give an exact reason for the change. Although the Omicron variant has some people on edge, major theater chains have given no indication that they plan on closing their doors anytime soon. It’s also possible that Sony wants to let Spider-Man: No Way Home finish its already record-breaking box office run before putting another Marvel movie in theaters.

Morbius’ latest delay also means we have to wait another three months to find out how the film relates to the MCU. Michael Keaton’s appearance in the trailers have implied a direct connection to Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man movies. We’ve also seen street art that brands Spider-Man a murderer (though the webhead’s costume design more closely resembles Tobey Maguire’s suit from the Sam Raimi trilogy). The film’s last trailer also directly references “that thing in San Francisco,” an obvious nod to Sony’s Venom series. But now that No Way Home has established that Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock occupies an alternate universe, we’re back to square one.
