Spider-Man: No Way Home Swings To $260 Million Opening

When Spider-Man: No Way Home had a spectacular $50 million Thursday preview, it was obviously going to have a huge opening. However, No Way Home outperformed even the most optimistic predictions. Via Deadline, the latest MCU Spider-Man movie finished its first weekend with a $260 million opening. That moves No Way Home past Avengers: Infinity War‘s $257 million to become the second highest domestic opening of all-time. Only Avengers: Endgame had a bigger opening weekend with a $357 million opening weekend in 2019.

Outside of America and Canada, No Way Home also performed like a box office superhero. The film’s worldwide total is now $600.8 million, and it is likely to become the first film of the pandemic era to hit $1 billion. Per THR, the only films with higher international debuts were Infinity War ($640.5 million) and Endgame ($1.2 billion).

Additionally, No Way Home now holds the record for the largest worldwide opening in December. The previous record was set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015 with $529 million worldwide. CinemaScore also gave No Way Home a rare A+ rating, which indicates that the audience has given it high scores across the board.

Sony Pictures is also celebrating its highest opening of all-time. The previous Sony champion was Spider-Man 3, which opened to $151 million in 2007. But the question now is simple: how high can No Way Home go? It’s unlikely that The Matrix Resurrections can unseat No Way Home next weekend, given its day and date release on HBO Max. That means the Spidey sequel has clear sailing ahead, aside from the ongoing pandemic. Regardless, COVID-19 concerns haven’t stopped Marvel fans yet.
