Sweet Tooth’s Jim Mickle Will Direct Netflix’s God Country Adaptation

After the success of Sweet Tooth earlier this year, Netflix is entrusting showrunner Jim Mickle with another comic book property. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Netflix has secured the rights to God Country, based on the six-issue limited series created by Donny Cates and Geoff Shaw. Mickle will direct the film adaptation and co-write the screenplay with Cates.

Cates and Shaw launched God Country through Image Comics in 2017. The series follows Emmet Quinlan, a dementia-ridden widower whose unpredictable violent outbursts frequently put him at odds with both the local cops and his own children. After a tornado ravages his West Texas town, Emmet discovers an enchanted sword in the wreckage that restores his physical and mental faculties. But when otherworldly creatures arrive in search of the weapon, he must use its power to keep his community safe.

News of a God Country adaptation first made the rounds back in 2018. At the time, Cates was going to write the script himself with Legendary and AfterShock Media co-producing the movie. Both studios are still on board, adding to Netflix’s growing list of collaborations with Legendary that also includes an Enola Holmes sequel and a live-action Gundam feature.

On the film side, Mickle is known for directing horror movies like Stake Land and We Are What We Are. His latest movie, In the Shadow of the Moon, was also released on Netflix in 2019. Mickle is producing God Country through his Nightshade banner alongside Linda Moran. Legendary’s Mary Parent and Ali Mendes will also produce with AfterShock’s Lee Kramer and Jon Kramer.
