Marvel Confirms Shang-Chi 2, Plans New Disney+ Spinoff Series

Given the runaway success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it was only a matter of time before Marvel got the ball rolling on a sequel. But now, it’s official. Deadline brings word that Destin Daniel Cretton has formally signed on to write and direct Shang-Chi 2. And that’s not all: Cretton is also working with Marvel on a new series for Disney+.

Cretton will develop both Shang-Chi 2 and his mystery TV project as part of his new multi-year pact with Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective. Under the deal’s terms, he will develop several new TV shows across a multitude of different platforms. He is also launching a new production house called Family Owned with his longtime collaborator, Asher Goldsetin. The banner aims to “highlight the experiences of communities that have traditionally been overlooked by pop culture.”

The report doesn’t actually say whether Cretton’s MCU series is connected to Shang-Chi in any way. Regardless, it’s hard to imagine what else it could be. As for the sequel, Cretton has previously said that he already has some ideas for where the franchise could go. The original film’s mid- and post-credits scenes also hinted that future installments would explore the origin of Wenwu’s rings of power and check in with Xialing, who became the head of her father’s organization.

“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings,” said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in a new statement. “We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started.”

Shang-Chi hit theaters back in September and marked the first appearance of Simu Liu as the MCU’s first Asian superhero in a headline role. In addition to receiving critical praise, the film went on to become the year’s highest-grossing domestic release. As of last month, the movie is currently available to own on Blu-ray or stream on Disney+.
