Over the last few years, Nicolas Cage has found a new niche for himself as the star of several oddball horror films. But now he’s getting ready to play one of the biggest horror icons of all time. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Cage has been cast as Dracula in Universal’s Renfield. Nicolas Cage cast.
Nicholas Hoult will star in Renfield as the title character, who originally appeared in Bram Stoker’s Dracula as an inmate at John Seward’s lunatic asylum. Renfield was usually found raving in his cell or eating insects and other small animals in order to absorb their life force and become immortal. However, readers later discovered that he was in service to Count Dracula himself.
This won’t be the first time that Cage and Hoult have shared the screen together. The two previously starred as father and son in The Weather Man in 2005.

Although his filmography is often hit or miss, Cage actually had a pretty successful 2021 thanks in part to his critically-acclaimed performance in Pig, which is now available to stream on Hulu. Cage also appeared in two new horror films this year: Willy’s Wonderland and Prisoners of the Ghostland. Some of Cage’s recent horror credits include Mandy and Color Out of Space.
Chris McKay is directing Renfield from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley. Robert Kirkman, who crafted the original story, is producing the film with Skybound’s David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst. McKay will also produce alongside executive producer Samantha Nisenboim.
Universal hasn’t announced a release date for Renfield.
