Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Casts Will Poulter as Adam Warlock

It’s been more than four years since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s post-credits scene teased that a major Marvel character would be making his live-action debut in the series’ third installment. Now, the role has finally been cast. Deadline is reporting that Will Poulter has signed on to play Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

In the comics, Adam Warlock was created by the scientists in the Enclave in an effort to make the perfect human being. After his “birth,” he rebelled against his creators and escaped to the far reaches of space, where he eventually found refuge on Counter-Earth. The MCU retconned his origin by having the Sovereigns create him as a weapon to use against Peter Quill and his teammates. Warlock also played an important role in Marvel’s original Infinity Gauntlet storyline as well as its follow-ups, including The Infinity War and The Infinity Crusade.

According to Deadline’s sources, Marvel and writer/director James Gunn began casting the part back in August. Poulter was one of several actors they met with. However, his screen test was apparently “too good to pass on.”

Gunn also took to Twitter to confirm the news.

Poulter will soon appear in Hulu’s upcoming miniseries Dopesick, which premieres this Wednesday, October 13. Some of his big screen credits include Detroit, Midsommar, and the Maze Runner series. Earlier this year, Poulter guest starred on an episode of Amazon’s The Underground Railroad. He also played a role in Netflix’s Black Mirror: Bandersnatch interactive movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters on May 23, 2023.
