Denis Villeneuve Discusses the Chances for Dune: Part Two

Had things gone according to Denis Villeneuve’s plans, fans would have been waiting for not just for one Dune movie but for two. The highly-touted director wanted to shoot Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two back-to-back, pretty much like Peter Jackson did with his Lord of The Rings trilogy. Much to his disappointment, Warner Bros. turned down the pitch. At least for now, the studio is waiting to see how audiences will react when the sci-fi blockbuster is finally released in North America.

“I wanted at the beginning to do the two parts simultaneously,” Villeneuve explained while talking with Variety. “For several reasons, it didn’t happen, and I agreed to the challenge of making part one and then wait to see if the movie rings enough enthusiasm. As I was doing the the first part, I really put all my passion into it, in case it would be the only one. But I’m optimistic.”

If Dune: Part One is a huge hit at the box office, producers won’t shy away from greenlighting the sequel. The critics’ reactions have been all but positive so far, but the ultimate test will take place in theaters this fall.

“If such a thing as Dune: Part Two happens, I will say that it’s going to be an insane playground for me,” Villeneuve added. “It’s going to be just like pure cinematic pleasure for the second part. I don’t want to speak for everybody on the team, but I will say that we really created on this movie a feeling of family and to re-unify everybody again together, that would be paradise.”

Dune debuts in theaters and on HBO Max on Oct. 22.
